Switch 2 Console Gets First Major Firmware Update Packed with Useful Enhancements
The Nintendo Switch 2 has gotten its first major software patch, version 21.0.0, and although it lacks anything entirely transformative, there are plenty of user experience enhancements to be excited about.
New Game Card Icons Offer Clear Identification
A key standout improvements includes updated badges that show over a game card, identifying whether that game is an original Nintendo Switch release, updated model, or downloadable copy.

Upgraded Player Finding and In-Game Communication Options
When locating players to connect with, the Search for Users You’ve Played With feature under Add Friend now covers users you've interacted with in your friends’ GameChat rooms.
With respect to GameChat, several enhancements have been introduced:
- The game won't automatically go to sleep when using chat.
- A feature to deactivate “Chat Audio Panning” was included.
- Voice remains active if the system switches from TV mode to on-the-go or stand mode, including when this change results in the connection transitioning from a cable setup to a Wi-Fi one.
Efficient Content Acquisition and Controller Audio Options
When downloading multiple pieces of software concurrently, you are now able to stop all downloads with a single tap.
Regarding premium controller players, a fresh fast-response audio option is added, allowing you to select between “Stable” or “Low Latency” options.
Reduced Delay will reduce sound delay relative to “Stable” but could be more susceptible to interference in some Wi-Fi settings.
Downloadable Software Data Installation Upgrade
Another key enhancement allows you to install data for a digital title if the “Use Online License” feature is deactivated.
This option is found in the Options of a digital title when opened via Downloadable Content from the console interface.
Further Device Upgrades
In addition to these major features, the patch brings various other refinements:
- Accessibility updates: Audio narration can vocalize suggested text letters on the Japan layout, and the Text-to-Speech Speed top speed got raised from 300% to four hundred percent.
- Display options: High Dynamic Range is now called to “System Screen’s HDR Output,” and screen size adjustment is now simpler to set up.
- Messages changes: The feature "Platinum Point Notification” has been retitled to "Nintendo Switch Online Notification."
- Device options: Battery management offers “Stop Charging Around 80-90%” replacing the previous “Stop Charging Around 90%” feature.
- Locale availability: Thai and Poland's language were added to the range of offered languages, though they will only be accessible in titles that support the specific tongue.
