Federal Government Poised to Send Dozens Law Enforcement to San Francisco

The Trump administration was preparing on Wednesday to deploy numerous of government officers to the northern California for a major immigration enforcement operation, triggering criticism from California leaders.

Details of the Deployment

Information of the operation were still emerging, but it will allegedly feature more than 100 federal agents, according to reports. The agents are expected to begin using the US Coast Guard base in across the bay, facing San Francisco. It remained unclear whether military personnel would join the operation.

Political Response

The operation follows months of warnings by the president to target the Democratic-run city. Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the decision, describing it as “straight from the authoritarian playbook”.

“He sends out covered agents, he dispatches customs officers, he sends out immigration officials, he generates anxiety and fear in the community so that he can lay claim for handling that by deploying the state troops,” the governor stated. “This is exactly like the arsonist fighting the inferno.”

City Readiness

San Francisco is the newest large urban area focused on by the federal effort of large-scale detentions. The operation is expected to trigger a confrontation between the administration and local leaders who have committed to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to fulfill ongoing warnings to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was ready.

“During this period, we have been anticipating the possibility of an impending national intervention in our city,” declared the leader, explaining that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our agencies are prepared ahead of any national intervention.”

Constitutional Context

Despite judicial disputes to missions in a several municipalities, including the Windy City, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, Trump has asserted “unquestioned power” to dispatch the military forces in cities, citing the federal statute which permits presidents limited power to deploy troops on American territory.

Community Preparation

The governor, who was formerly as San Francisco’s chief executive – had pledged to take action “immediately” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the White House can deploy troops into our cities with no valid reason supported by evidence, no supervision, no responsibility, no respect for local authority – it constitutes an attack on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including civil rights groups created during the first Trump administration, have prepared to rapidly assemble a large protest in the city, as well as peaceful assemblies at local libraries.

Community Consequences

In San Francisco’s Mission district, a mostly Latin American population, local representative informed journalists last week she and her voters had been bracing for this time. “The point that people stop going to work, when minority individuals are afraid to go outdoors without the concern of government officers racially profiling and detaining them, the moment when students avoid classrooms, are too scared to go to the supermarket or medical provider,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is basically a shutdown the scale of which we have not experienced since Covid.”

National Guard Condition

Approximately 300 out of 4,000 state military personnel stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. About two hundred of them had been dispatched to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby during a court case over their mission.

This time, Newsom said he had requested the local soldiers under his authority to operate food banks amid the administrative stoppage.
