England's Jordan Henderson Reflects on "Challenging Periods" Following Saudi Arabia Switch
England midfielder Jordan Henderson states he has encountered "difficult moments" since leaving Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and admits he might "taken different decisions".
The 35-year-old received backlash for departing Liverpool in 2023 to play for Al-Ettifaq in a nation where LGBTQ+ relationships are criminalized.
Henderson had formerly been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and said sorry for disappointing or hurting people in the LGBTQ+ community when he departed from Saudi Arabia to sign with Ajax half a year after.
International Selection and Thoughts
Henderson was omitted from Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but has returned to the Premier League with Brentford and the England squad under Thomas Tuchel.
"In my opinion it was the factor why I didn't make the Euros," Henderson stated. "When I was in Saudi I believe I was in each gathering before the Euros."
"Timing, with everything in looking back, yes - perhaps I would have made different decisions."
"But at the moment that's how I thought and the decision I made was for many different reasons and only I know them reasons."
Emotional Struggles
"Honestly speaking, over the past few years I have had various tough moments. It seemed like a separation when I left Liverpool."
"Of course I'm not without fault and I've made poor choices in the past. Of course I will have during my career."
"However all I've ever sought to do is the correct thing."
International Experience
Henderson has gained 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.
He is in Tuchel's squad to face Wales and Latvia this week and believes he still has plenty to provide on the pitch.
"The key people are the manager, the technical staff and the players and what they believe," said Henderson.
"Inquire with them what they feel, if I am a motivator when I am here. I don't believe one of the finest managers in Europe would be choosing me just to do that."
